Where to Clean an Area Rug, for Wet Climates

Oriental area rugs are a big investment, both for home décor and for family prosperity. Not only cozy and inviting design elements, fine rugs are often honoured as family heirlooms and priceless antiques. In our last post we discussed how to clean a persian rug, and here we address another important side to this process: the question of where to clean an area rug.

Do it Yourself at Home vs Professional Rug Cleaners

In each section bellow we’re going to look at some of the best places to clean an area rug, whether it’s inside at home, outside with a garden hose, or taking it to a professional area rug cleaner. Let’s get to the bottom of where you should, and where you shouldn’t, clean an area rug.

In the second part of this post, part 2, we will look at How to dry an Area Rug at Home - so be sure to follow up on that!

Cleaning an Area Rug at Home

Cleaning an area rug at home indoors may be suitable for smaller and less expensive area rugs with a couple of exceptions:

  1. Large Area Rugs: for large rugs you may need to clean it outside or use a professional cleaning service depending on your size and space constraints.
  2. Expensive Oriental Rugs: for pricy or priceless rugs, it’s better to protect your investment with a professional rug cleaning service. If you want your rug to last, details like PH balance, chemicals, and detergents are important as they can affect a rug’s colours, fibers, durablity, and longevity. Just deciding which cleaning solutions you should apply depends on an assessment of the particular fibers and condition of the individual rug.

Cleaning an Area Rug Outside with a Hose

First things first, before cleaning your rug outside, make sure the weather is warm and dry to allow for adequate drying within a 24-hour period.

Be careful about drying time, mold can begin to grow on a rug or carpet within 24-48 hours.

Next take into account the weight of your rug when wet. A large area rug will soak up a lot of water, making it very heavy when wet. If it’s a struggle to lift when dry, it’s going to weigh to much to lift when wet.

Choose a place to hang it that can take the weight of a wet rug, such as a handrail or guard rail. A clothesline can break or come down from the weight. In our next post we will move into more detail on how to best dry your rug after cleaning.
