Vancouver Carpet Cleaning: Caring for Expensive or Antique Rugs

Vacuuming might seem tedious, especially if there’s no visible dirt. However, area rugs need to be cleaned at least once a week. Even if debris can’t be seen, ground in dirt can wear away at carpet fibres, causing them to fray and break. This can seriously impact both the beauty and life of an area rug.

Rotate the rug, just like a mattress. Hair should be brushed out, following the natural nap of the fibres. And if the rug is small and manageable, there’s no reason that it can’t be shaken out outside. A good shake works well on most rugs, except Oriental, which should be vacuumed using an upholstery attachment.

There are a few handy tricks that can be used on speciality rugs. Sheepskin, for example, can be cleaned using talcum powder. Just shake some powder onto the rug and brush it through the fur. Then shake off outside. For braided rugs, a commercial cleaning solution will do the trick (remember to spot test first). Lay the rug on a hard surface with a blanket underneath. Then sponge and rub the cleaning solution into the rug. Rinse with warm water and let the rug dry on the blanket.

For handmade or antique rugs, place a nylon screen on top before vacuuming with an upholstery attachment. Do not use a beater. The objective is to suction the dirt away with least amount of contact possible.
