Carpet Cleaning Tips for a Longer Lasting CarpetNovember 29th, 2017 | by Angelo | 0
When it comes to extending the life of your rug or carpet, you’re far from helpless against the power of time. Good maintenance can double the life of your carpets. That means you won’t have to replace them nearly as often, and save lots of money in the long run. Let’s have a look at what you can do to keep that carpet going for years to come.
Dirt: Dirt does more than just discolour your carpets, each grain is like a tiny blade cutting against the fabric. The more you walk on it, the more those sharp particles grind against the fibres, creating tiny nicks and breaking pieces off. Eventually, when you’re vacuuming, you’re actually carrying away tiny parts of the carpet as well.
How do you avoid this? The first thing to remember is to vacuum often. High traffic areas should be done twice a week, and the rest of the carpeting weekly. The less time the dirt has to grind, the less damage it’ll be able to cause. Use a few slow passes on high traffic areas to get at the more ground-in dirt; it’ll work more effectively than several fast passes. For a more preventative approach, consider getting a walk-off mat for your home. The more dirt you prevent from getting on the carpets in the first place, the better.
Stains: The longer a stain remains, the harder it is to remove. If you go after a stain right away, chances are you can remove it. Most stains can be removed just by applying water and pressing it dry with a cloth over and over until the stain is gone. Remember, rubbing or scrubbing just drives the staining substance deeper into the fibres—it can even damage the fibres and create a fuzzy area.
Be patient and continue blotting until the stain is removed. If water isn’t doing the trick, you can try mixing in vinegar or club soda with the water. And if all else fails, you can try stronger commercial cleaning products. Just remember to test those products on an inconspicuous patch of your carpet first!
Going Pro: When home treatment isn’t cutting it, it’s time to go pro. But it’s important to make sure the company you call is one you’re comfortable working with. Don’t rely on an estimate taken over the phone, find a company willing to provide in-home estimates. Discount carpet cleaners depend on quantity of sales rather than quality of service, or the discounts they offer are meant to get them into your house to sell high priced add-ons that quality cleaning companies already provide as part of their service. Remember, in the end, you get what you pay for.
